Use Institution-Enabled Draft Coach for a Pre-Submission Review

Turnitin Draft Coach is a documented way to review a draft without submitting that draft to a normal Turnitin assignment, when your institution has enabled the service. It is not an unrestricted personal Turnitin checker, and it is separate from the final assignment submission process.

Check which editor your institution supports

Turnitin’s Draft Coach FAQ describes an institution-configured add-on for Google Docs or Word online, with availability dependent on licensing and administrator setup. It does not run in desktop Word. Your institution configures the supported editor option, so confirm that option instead of assuming the same add-on appears in both editors.

Use the appropriate institutional account and the actual supported document editor. If the add-on is unavailable, consult the school’s instructions or administrator. Creating a personal account elsewhere does not automatically grant access to a school-configured service.

Keep the draft’s role clear

Open the intended working document and retain a saved revision before reviewing it. Draft Coach helps identify issues during writing; it does not replace the final submission required by a course. Keep the paper’s title, revision and source notes with any feedback you use.

The vendor states that Draft Coach does not place the checked draft in the Turnitin or institutional submission repository. That is a product-specific statement about Draft Coach, not a promise about every upload to every assignment or third-party checking service.

Review the substance of a match

Read the matched source alongside the draft. Check whether the passage uses exact wording, paraphrases an idea or reproduces a common template. Review nearby attribution instead of treating an isolated highlighted phrase as the whole source-use context.

Suppose your draft repeats a source’s explanation of a process but omits the source name. Decide whether to quote the wording or rewrite an accurate explanation with appropriate attribution. Replacing individual words while preserving an uncredited source contribution does not address the underlying issue.

Verify citation feedback against the source

Use citation feedback to locate a possible inconsistency, then check the source details and the style required by the assignment. A reference entry can look well formatted while pointing to a source that does not support the claim. Review author, title, date and the relevant location when those details are available.

Keep quotation boundaries and qualifications intact. If the source describes a limited sample or an uncertain finding, the revised draft should not turn it into a universal fact. Similarity review and factual review are related tasks, but one does not automatically complete the other.

Complete the final assignment separately

After revising, follow the instructor’s actual submission instructions. Confirm the final file or document revision and retain the confirmation supplied by that system. A draft check does not establish that the final work has been submitted or accepted before a deadline.

If Draft Coach is not available, use the approved process your institution provides. The local Text Diff Checker can compare two supplied passages but cannot substitute for Turnitin’s broader source comparison. Keep that narrower scope explicit when using it to review a known source.

Keep the next review action clear

For each revised passage, keep a small comparison with the original source claim, the proposed wording and the attribution you intend to use. Verify that the revision preserves quantities, scope and uncertainty. This manual review remains useful even when a matching service is unavailable, and it prevents a change made for fluency from quietly introducing a stronger claim than the source supports.
