Rewrite Sentences While Preserving Facts and Logic
Preserve actors, quantities, conditions, timing and uncertainty when rewriting sentences, using a meaning checklist and concrete examples of unsafe changes.
To rewrite sentences without changing their meaning, preserve their factual content and logical relationships before improving style. Names and numbers are obvious checks, but negatives, conditions, probability and the scope of a claim matter just as much. A fluent rewrite can still be wrong if it changes one of those details.
Create a meaning checklist
For each sentence, identify who acts, what happens, what is affected, when it happens and any limits on the claim. Add conditions, comparisons and uncertainty words to that list. Treat these as constraints for the revision rather than as optional wording.
For The team may release two updates after the review, the checklist includes the team, a possible release, two updates and a time after the review. The sentence does not guarantee release or say the review has already finished.
Preserve the strength of the claim
Acceptable revision: After the review, the team may release two updates.
Changed meaning: After the review, the team will release two updates.
Moving the time phrase changes emphasis. Replacing may with will changes the level of commitment. Similarly, suggests, is associated with and proves are not interchangeable ways to make a research sentence sound less repetitive.
If a source is cautious, keep its caution unless other evidence justifies a stronger claim. A desire for confident writing does not supply that evidence.
Keep negatives and their scope
Not all applications were approved means that at least some applications were not approved. No applications were approved says that every application lacked approval. These statements are not equivalent.
Only Mira reviewed the file also differs from Mira reviewed only the file. The first limits the reviewer; the second limits what Mira reviewed. When moving only, even or not, check which part of the sentence the word modifies.
Retain the direction of a condition
The gate opens if the sensor detects a vehicle makes detection a condition sufficient for opening in the stated rule. The gate opens only if the sensor detects a vehicle makes detection necessary for opening. Replacing if with only if changes the logical relationship.
For ordinary procedural writing, keep the condition explicit rather than compressing it into an ambiguous phrase. If a rewrite reverses the events or turns a dependency into a guarantee, restore the original relationship.
Preserve numbers, units and comparisons
At least ten samples means ten or more, while more than ten excludes ten. Up to ten includes values no greater than ten in its ordinary quantitative use. These boundary words should survive a revision even when the sentence is shortened.
Likewise, reducing a delay by twenty percent differs from reducing it to twenty percent of its original value. Keep the baseline and unit visible. A percentage without its reference value can be grammatical yet misleading.
Avoid changing responsibility
Mira reviewed the application can become The application was reviewed by Mira without changing the stated actor. The application was approved by Mira adds an outcome. The application was reviewed removes the named actor and may omit a detail that matters to the task.
Active and passive constructions can both be appropriate. Choose according to emphasis and what the evidence establishes, then confirm that the revision has not introduced or concealed responsibility that the reader needs.
Split long sentences with their links intact
A long sentence may become two shorter ones, but preserve the relationship between its parts. The workshop was postponed because the venue closed can become The venue closed. As a result, the workshop was postponed. The causal link remains explicit.
That second sentence is only appropriate because the original already states a cause. Do not add as a result when the source merely reports two events in sequence.
Compare meaning after comparing words
A text comparison can help locate edits, but unchanged vocabulary does not prove unchanged logic. Read each revised sentence against the checklist and then within its paragraph. Pronouns may acquire a different reference when nearby sentences move.
For borrowed ideas, preserve attribution as well as meaning. Purdue OWL’s paraphrasing guidance provides further context on representing a source in new wording. No automated similarity score can replace the factual and logical review described here.
